Spring Festival
Red Envelope Switch: Long ago there was a mischievous spirit called “Sui” that would sneak out on New Year’s Eve and touch the heads of sleeping children, making them silly. One New Year’s Eve, a family named Guan strung eight copper coins on red thread to entertain their child. In the middle of the night, a gust of wind blew out the candles and “Sui” slipped in. The string of copper coins by the child’s pillow shone brightly in the moonlight, scaring “Sui” away. After this, people would place eight copper coins strung on red thread by children’s pillows on New Year’s Eve to ward off “Sui”. Therefore, Chinese people call this “Lucky Money”.
Couplet Switch: On the first day of the new year, spring couplets are posted. The blessings for the year are inside. The top line is posted on the right, the bottom line on the left, and the header cannot be forgotten, with the character for blessing posted upside down to bring good fortune home.
Reunion Dinner Switch: No matter where you are, New Year’s Eve means having a joyous reunion dinner with family. The reunion dinner is also called the year-end dinner, marking the end of one year and the start of the next.
